Mozambique LNG targets 2028 start-up – TotalEnergies

TotalEnergies is “working to create the conditions for a restart” of its Mozambique LNG project, “with a target start up in 2028”, confirmed Nicolas Terraz, president for exploration and production at the French major. TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne stated that “the situation has clearly improved because the governmental forces, supported by other countries, in particular Rwanda, have taken back the control of the situation in [the northern province of] Cabo Delgado”. Pouyanne confirmed “a number of audits” have been completed and assessed as “satisfactory”, while the company’s “objective is to restart the project [in 2028] before year end”. Pouyanne also subsequently confirmed at an event in London that “Mozambique LNG will have many phases”, indicating that future capacity additions are planned. The French major is the largest stakeholder in the two train, 12.9mt/yr Mozambique LNG project and its equity share of output will be 3mt/yr. “LNG developments need large resources”, the CEO continued, adding that plenty of sizeable gas resources — such as Mozambique — have already been discovered, so TotalEnergies is more interested in future brownfield expansions than in fresh exploration efforts. [The] objective is to restart the project before year end” Pouyanne, TotalEnergies.
