Nigeria, Niger and Algeria advance Trans-Saharan gas pipeline

The governments of Nigeria, Niger and Algeria have signed agreements to further develop the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline (TSGP), the Algerian government revealed following a ceremony on Tuesday in Algiers.

The agreements include an update of the project’s feasibility study, a compensation agreement and a non-disclosure agreement for the energy companies involved in the project. Representatives from the three governments signed the feasibility-study contract. The compensation and non-disclosure agreements were signed by representatives from Sonatrach, NNPC and SONIDEP.

Mohamed Arkab, minister of energy and mining of Algeria, said that the updated feasibility study will make clear “the necessary means to accelerate the realisation of this important project within a reasonable timeframe and at competitive costs to ensure energy market supply.”

The TSGP has long been discussed between the three countries but has faced serious delays due to security concerns. Since 2022, talks have restarted to complete the project. It represents an investment of USD 13 billion and will cover 4,128-kilometres, leveraging a significant regional network of pipelines. When finished, the pipeline is expected to deliver 30 bcm [1.06 tcf] annually to the gas-hungry European market.
